Quarter 2: Outside Reading Post #13
Amir and Baba made it to Fremont, California and lived there in the 1980s, "Baba loved the idea of America"(Hosseini 125). Although he loved the idea of America, he disagreed with some of the politics there and was the lone republic in their apartment building. It was hard to adjust to life in America for both Amir and Baba. They went from living a glorious life as the richest family in their city to being poor and hardly having any friends. All of Baba's hard work and money earned had gone down the drain, and he went from being a big buisness man to a manager of gas station. One Sunday in the spring of 1983, Baba and Amir were on a walk and Baba went to the Fast & Easy, a small grocery store owned and run by an elderly Vietnamese couple Mr. and Mrs. Nguyen. When Baba didn't have any cash he tried to pay for his items with a check, so then Mr. Nguyen asked to see i.d., "He wants to see my license,... almost two years we've bought his damn fruits and put money in his pocket and the son of a dog wants my license!" (Hosseini 127). Amir settled Baba down and guided him out of the store so Mr. Nguyen wouldn't call the police. Baba was angered because Mr. Nguyen knew who he was and he didn't understand why he was so persistent on seeing his license it was almost like they didn't trust Baba. Baba was so used to all the people like in Afghanistan were they would go and buy food and at the end of the month he would pay them. The differences between America and Afghanistan will be hard to adjust to for Amir and Baba
