In a Yup'ik Eskimo village in Akiachak, Alaska the population is only 700. People here live off of the salmon and bear they have caught. Also there are some items of food that we consider normal, but for outrageous prices! For example a 20.oz box of Cheerios is $8.29, a 12.oz bag og Lays potato chips is $7.39, and 19.oz can of progresson beef barly soup sells for $4.29. Most of the houses are weather beaten, and on stilts, while only two thirds of the community has sewer lines and is connected to water only a few years ago, the other third of the town shower with the water they retireve fron the Kuskokwim River and use honey buckets to dump the water on themselves. Other high prices in this small town is gas and heating oil, while gas costs $6.59 a gallon, heating oil is $7.06 a gallon. The village is very safe, but only 6 months ago, it experienced its first murder. Many people in Akiachak are losing interest in the old fashion lifestyle and are moving the Anchorage. Many of the children are interested in I pods and more modern technology while thier parents want them to learn to speak Yup'ik. This article sort of reminds me of Animal Dreams because Codi always thought of Grace, Arizona as an old and not modernized city and liked to live in mor busy areas. The city of Grace and its residents, also did depend heavily on its agriculture, as the people of Akiachak depend on the salmon and bear they hunt.
