Quarter 2: Outside Reading Psot #11

On their drive they have to stop at checkpoints, and one of the checkpoints was at Mahipar. When they arrived at Mahipar there were two soldiers, one Afghan and the other Russian. When the Russian solider browsed the truck full of people, while he was scanning the passangers his eyes settled on a young women. The driver and the two soldiers had a slight debate in Russian, the driver clarified what they were discussing, "Karin cleared his throat, dropped his head. Said the solider wanted a half hour with the lady in the back of the truck" (Hosseini 115). The Russian solider also said that it was his price for letting them pass, and even though they had already paid good money he said that every price has a tax. Being a respectable man Baba was very angered by that comment so he stood up and questions the soldiers respect is and where his shame is. Right then the solider raised his gun to Baba and Amir had a thousand thoughts running through his head about what will happen if Baba dies, "The gun roared. But the whirlwind of half thoughts spinning in my head came to a halt when I cracked my eyelids, found Baba still standing"(Hosseini 116). It turns out the the gun shot was from a second Russian officer, and he apologized for the soldiers behavior and explained that he was attached to drug then. As the drove on, after fifteen minutes of silence, the young women's husband went over and kissed Baba's hand as a sign of gratitude.
